National Youth Day is celebrated in India on 12 January on the birthday of Swami Vivekananda. In 1984, the Government of India declared and decided to observe the birthday of Swami Vivekananda (12 January, according to the English calendar) as a National Youth Day every year from 1985 onwards. To quote from the Government of India's communication, 'it was felt that the philosophy of Swamiji and the ideals for which he lived and worked could be a great source of inspiration for the Indian Youth.' Swami Vivekananda स्वामी विवेकानन्द (January 12, 1863--July 4, 1902), born Narendranath Dutta was the chief disciple of the 19th century mystic Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and the founder of Ramakrishna Mission. He is considered a key figure in the introduction of Hindu philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga in Europe and America and is also credited with raising interfaith awareness, bringing Hinduism to the status of a world religion during the end of the 19th century. Vivekananda is considered to be a major force in the revival of Hinduism in modern India.He is perhaps best known for his inspiring speech beginning with "Sisters and Brothers of America",[5][6] through which he introduced Hinduism at the Parliament of the World's Religions at Chicago in 1893. Gary Decker, Middle School Teacher from Conneaut Valley High School, has been teaching special education and social studies in the Conneaut School District for eleven years. On Wednesday, October 20, 2010, he received the UCP/CLASS Advocacy and Awareness Award at the 18th Annual Community Heroes Awards Dinner. Four years ago, Gary became involved with National Youth Service Day assisting students with service learning activities. The Annual Wheelchair Basketball Game for National Youth Service Day involves students planning and organizing the fundraising event, and especially demonstrating that they value a community where everyone belongs.

The Aboriginal Youth Video Project involved teaching 12 young people from Richmond, British Columbia, how to create a video story of their experience as young Aboriginal people living in Richmond. The youth were encouraged to reflect on their history and current issues in society, and to include footage and reflections on Richmonds National Aboriginal Day events which celebrate Aboriginal identity. The video is to be used to support teaching about healing and reconciliation. The video is used with permission from the Richmond Youth Services Agency.

On October 8, 2008, the 4-H Youth Development Program introduced its first annual 4-H National Youth Science Day during National 4-H Week. To showcase 4-H and Cooperative Extension's impact in the sciences, 4-H encouraged millions of 4-H youth and volunteers, parents, teachers, students, and fellow youth organizations to participate in the first-ever National Science Experiment. Dr. Bob Horton, 4-H Extension specialist for The Ohio State University, Steve Spangler, science author, teacher and TV personality, and members of the 4-H Science, Engineering, and Technology Leadership Task Force who draw knowledge from ten Land-Grant Universities across the country developed the National Science Experiment -- Helpful Hydrogels. The experiment focuses on the environment and uses science principles to teach youth across the country about the importance of water conservation. 4-H National Youth Science Day is a springboard for 4-H's new public service ad campaign: One Million New Scientists. Audry Goh and Justin Tan work with the Singapore Ministry of Education to promote youth service in Singapore. This video was taken of them at the 2008 IANYS Conference in Paris, France, in which representatives of youth service organizations and governments from all around the world gathered to discuss the past, present, and future of National Youth Service. Even though we can read about programs in different countries, its different to hear the rationale and justifications and what issues that they face on the ground. When you hear the programs being described and hear them being discussed, you can understand a lot more what drives them and gets them going day to day, what sort of considerations they have that isnt put down in the foundations or the structure of the program. www.limerickyouthservice.com. Limerick City Youth Forum (Comhairle na nÓg) meets weekly in Limerick Youth Service (LYS) on Lower Glenworth Street. They organise events, campaigns and programmes and discuss key issues of concern to young people in the city. To ensure that the group is as broadly representative of young peoples' views, LYS issue invitations to young people through all city secondary schools, youth clubs, groups and projects. Every year the forum organise an annual Comhairle and the National Youth Forum, Daíl na nÓg decide which topics will be discussed at this annual event. This year the forum was held at Thomond Park and the topic was mental health so the Limerick forum put the focus on bullying and its effects on young people. Limerick Youth Service facilitated the youth forum with achieving their vision for the event and their management of the day. They discussed the types of bullying being experienced, the most prevalent types of bullying, anti-bullying policies in schools and sources of support. We asked Éamonn Ó Briain, a youth who facilitated the event if young people were bullied because they were different and he told us "It's alright to be different, it is better to be your own person rather than being what other people want you to be." We had an incredible day at the event and it was great to see the youth of Limerick given a voice.

Celebrated on the birthday of Swami Vivekananda on January 12th, National Youth Festival is organised every year by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. January 12th in India is celebrated as National Youth Day and the week, commencing from that day, as the National Youth Week. As part of the celebration, holding of National Youth Festival began in 1995 as a major activity under the programme of National Integration Camp (NIC). The Festival propagates the concept of national integration, communal harmony, brotherhood, courage and adventure amongst the youth. NYF 2011 is the 16th of its league, while the last one being held at Bhubaneswar, Orissa. The event is jointly organised and coordinated by the Government of India (GoI) and Government of Rajasthan (GoR) along with Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangthan (NYKS) and National Service Scheme (NSS). The magnificent city of Rajasthan -- Udaipur will play host to the expected 5000 participants and all 35 states and UTs. Apart from the young enthusiasts and many government officials, the City of Lakes, for the first time in any NYF, will be graced by the presence of foreign delegations from ASEAN and SAARC. The event, with the theme 'Sabse Pehle Bharat', comprises competitive cultural events including folk & classical dances, one act plays, etc. and numerous non-competitive events.

Building on the successful model of the Clinton Global Initiative, which brings together world leaders to take action on global challenges, President Clinton launched the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) in 2007 to engage the next generation of leaders on college campuses around the world. Each year, CGI U hosts a meeting for students, national youth organizations, and university officials to discuss solutions to pressing global issues. The second CGI U Meeting will be held at The University of Texas at Austin from February 13-15, 2009. Nearly one thousand students will come together to make a difference in CGI Us five focus areas: Education, Energy & Climate Change, Global Health, Peace & Human rights, and Poverty Alleviation. After discussing member commitments and possible global solutions models, CGIU members come together to participate in a community service project to experience results and service in action. Former President Bill Clinton delivered this address on Sunday February 15, 2009 Austin, Texas before the service project.

September 11, 2011 marks the 10th Anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, a moment that through tragedy brought together cultures, bridged differences and united citizens of goodwill around the world in a spirit of unity and commitment. In tribute to all of those who were lost and the tens of thousands who rose in service, 9/11 has been designated a National Day of Service and Remembrance.
